Thank you for consulting me in this matter, as I have opinions. To my mind, this was actually a three-step transition.
Step One: Season Two
You’re right on about the bangs being a signifier. Look at this:
and compare it to this:
In addition to the more adult choice of hairstyle, he just looks less rosy-cheeked and pretty-like-a-girl, and a bit more angular and ravishable.
Speaking of ravishable, this happened in S2 and then I don’t think any of us ever looked at him quite the same way:
I don’t necessarily like the cultural construct that sex “makes one a man,” but in this case it’s fairly apt.
Step Two: Season Four
The next big “whoa” change happened for me after he noticeably bulked up between seasons three and four.
I don’t know about you, but I was kind of shocked when I saw him at the start of season four. Not only was there suddenly so much MORE of him, in a good way, but it also changed his whole face:
Like, strikingly so, in my opinion.
We could stop here, because that is clearly not a baby face anymore, but I feel like there was one more step to the transition from early-seasons Jared to grown-ass man Jared, and it happened right around …
Step Three: Season Eight
I look at season eight Jared, and that’s when I really start to see the Jared we know and love today. There is no more “pretty-like-a-girl” effect here, having been replaced by the “grown-ass-man UNF” effect which we continue to enjoy today.
Handsome, rugged, majestic. Almost unrecognizable from Baby!Jared. Transition complete.
This is for science and this time we can name it: the evolution of man.
