What if they’ve tried to buy Sam a couch? What if they tried to buy an Archie Bunker style recliner with a cupholder for Dean? What if they’ve tried to get brighter lamps for the library. What if the bunker Does Not Appreciate uninvited outside furniture and something always seems to happen to it within a week. Or it just plain old disappears.

Yes good –

The Bunker let Dean have his new mattress because it wasn’t quite awake yet, it didn’t realize these newcomers meant to stay, and it certainly hadn’t realized how much the old mattresses didn’t suit the new tenants.

Sam bought a TV – no problem, the Bunker was intensely curious about the new technology.

But it drew the line when Sam tried to buy an office chair for his room.  He already had chairs, why did he need a new one?  The allen wrench was the first thing to vanish, followed by some of the wheels.  The Bunker was definitely hurt when Sam ignored the lovely chairs that popped up across the first floor as he paced on the phone with customer support.

Oh and then they had the gall to bring a couch in.  And lamps and more chairs and shelving units and bookshelves and the Bunker slowly began to hate the word Ikea with a burning passion that traveled all the way from its foundations to the top of its roof.  And the way the Winchesters talked about that place, with it’s winding mazes and how they kept getting lost and how dare they go visit another Eldritch Building.

When the entire house is sulking, you notice.

The doors would stick, the lights would flip off randomly, the ice cube trays never froze, the coffee was always burned, and the pipes would start ticking at 10 pm sharp every single night.

But the thing is, the Winchesters didn’t notice.  Dean just shrugged and took apart the freezer, looking for the problem.  Sam oiled the hinges and bled the pipes.  The Winchesters made do.  And by the time the Bunker figured out that they didn’t have anything of their own, that they were staying and they had just wanted a few small comforts, it was too late.

Hunters don’t have time or money for a lot.  Hunters that feel that the world is coming after them, that they’re always a breath away from dying?  Fighting with furniture is pretty far down on the list.  Sam learned how to pull the chairs together, and Dean pulled the lamp closer, and they made do with the home they had.
