Ok, I have a confession to make. Mostly for @ladylilithprime, but all sastiel shippers and SPNfam knitters are welcome on this post. I see your sastiel with knitter!Sam, and I raise you sastiel with knitter!Cas.
Castiel:
- is knowledgeable enough about the web to watch Netflix by himself and if he knows about YouTube, can watch tutorials.
- doesn’t sleep. Ever. 4-8 extra hours of knitting every single day.
- no aches or pains from knitting.
- had a long period of time where he was in the bunker, alone, (likely) dealing with PTSD. (Season ??? I forgot but he had flashbacks.) Knitting is a therapeutic pastime.
- Smart as fuck. Could pick up the basics easily. First garter swatch to designing his own cabled, intarsia, fair isle sweaters in less than a month. S2g.
- Perfect work. His only errors are blindly trusting the pattern designer.
PLUS:
- Sam Winchester blushing, stammering, and humbly accepting the first handknits from Cas. If you give Sam an inch, he will give you a goddamned mile.
- Sam wearing his boyfriend’s gifts around the bunker, in the library doing research. Inspecting and holding the fabrics closely when Cas isn’t there for whatever reason.
- Cas won’t take any shit from Dean about it. (I’m sure he wouldn’t let Dean give Sam any shit, but he’s not always around them.)
- Sam and Cas curled up together on the couch, Sam bundled up and reading and Cas knitting. Or even Cas’ current project being a blanket that’s in both their laps.
- Sam staring at Cas wide-eyed when Cas makes eye contact while he’s knitting. Even the most skilled human there ever was would have to pay close attention, and not only is Cas not looking, he’s telling an old story from hundreds (maybe thousands) of years ago. Or even lore or recent case details (he brings knitting on hunts to not get bored on late nights/early hours of morning)
I would like to bring everyone’s attention to the fact that knitter!Cas is not a new idea for me, as I made a knitter!Cas post almost a year ago today. Also, Misha Collins knits.
Knitter!Cas is very dear to my heart, @samknitchester! Alas, so often I see knitter!Cas being paired off with Dean and so my heart cried out for knitter!Sam with the idea of giving Sam and Cas even more to bond over. (Because you know Sam would totally be supportive of Cas knitting and might even ask to learn if he didn’t already know how given how useful a skill it is to have.)
I give you this idea:
The Bunker Stitch’nBitch
- Sam learned to knit as a child from one of the many impromptu babysitters he and Dean had when they were young, and it was a hobby John didn’t complain about given the importance of durable socks to a soldier; later he picked up more decorative types of knitting and might even pass long car trips knitting, which Dean only ribs him for a little since he doesn’t want to risk Sam not fixing his socks anymore.
- Castiel found himself with frequent long hours to himself due to never sleeping and quickly picked up knitting as both a meditative and utilitarian skill, knitting for the church charity drive as Emmanuel and knitting thick socks and hats for his fellow patients in the hospital. When homeless and human, he learned about taking apart old sweaters and reknitting the yarn into hats or scarves or socks that could be sold to passerby for money to buy food for himself and others without homes.
- Dean doesn’t knit. He has great if silent respect for the ones who do, but those thin and tiny needles make him nervous and he can’t believe Sammy isn’t scared of breaking those things when he’s working in the car. Dean does, however, crochet, a skill he learned from Lisa during the time they lived together, and the solid single hook felt less fragile to him while still letting him feel closer to his absent brother.
Picture Sam knitting the “academic sweaters” he and Dean have used for witness interviews.
Picture Castiel knitting a baby blanket for the not yet born Jack.
Picture Dean, helpless to do anything to save his brother from the Trials or even his nightmares of Lucifer, crocheting an afghan to keep Sam warm when the chills creep in.
Picture Sam giving Jack his very own knitted sweater.
Picture Castiel teaching Jack how to knit a hat and scarf and gloves for Sam.
Picture all of them sitting in the bunker together with their respective projects, just chatting and crafting and stitching their ragtag little family back together.
Can we add that they incorporate magical items and symbols into their patterns?
They saturate the yarns in oils or incense for protection or power.
Spellwork by adding knots at specific points in the patrerns.
Changing colors to form complex symbols–enochian or human magics.
Socks–stealth, swiftness, and safe returns so they never lose their way.
Hats–clear thinking, focus, anti-possession/influence from outside forces
Gloves–strength, precision, grip enhancement
Sweaters–protection, warding, stealth/blending, endurance
Beadwork and feathers added to talismans they make as bracelets or necklaces.
They would be glorious in their knitted battle armor!
