You know, I’m watching SPN 1.16 and as Meg makes sexual moves at Sam while she’s got him tied and banged up, and I realize I can’t remember a time when violence against Dean got sexualized. Not once.
Which, well. Maybe I’m wrong, but tbh it’s one more way in which Sam is coded as the woman (and therefore less worthy) protagonist of the show.
You’re not wrong. A lot of people have noted that Sam is in a traditional feminine role (x) (x) (x) . As you observed, women and the traditional femininity are judged to be of less value. I like to use the example of how Sansa is treated by the GOT fandom, she’s girly girl and her greatest sin is that she made mistakes while acting like a girl and interested in “girly” things, unlike her tomboy sister who is universally beloved. Sam preference for salads/healthy food, soft music, and a normal life are referred to as “girly” on the show. He is also given the same treatment that female characters get; the victim blaming, being called “annoying” and “whiny for asserting himself and expressing his feelings, or for not fully submitting to the wills and wants of the masculine Dean.
Yeah, Sam’s coding as the ‘girl’ of the show isn’t even subtle tbh, it kind of whacks at you with a shovel, but I admit after *counts* a little under 3years away from the show and fandom I’d forgotten some of the details (such as the sexualized violence) and I’m kind of rediscovering it as I rewatch the first five seasons (my beloved <3)
Also, because it’s relevant to the conversation:

Ok
yes but Dean is constantly sexualized? Like… all the time? The demons
commenting how pretty he is? Heck even other hunters? Abbadon does it
pretty regularly?Tbh I never perceived the comments on Dean’s pretinness as sexualizing him, but more as a way to degrade him–which is linked in many ways, but also slightly different.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t remember a time where violence against Dean was supposed to be titillating. Aside from maybe the siren (and even there I don’t think that happened) I don’t think there was a time a creature actually put the moves on Dean while being violent with him.
From what I remember, the ‘prety’ qualifier for Dean is used more as a short hand for ‘weak and worthless’ than ‘I wanna rape you’. In short, it’s used to undermine Dean’s masculinity whereas in the Shadows scene I’m refering, Meg is pretty clearly ready to jump Sam’s bones if given the occasion.
Not here to argue femine coding or which brother is more important, or anything of that nature just to point a few truths from the show out.
Dean has had “femine coding” also. The vampire that turned him, told him he was pretty first, and his turning Dean was rather sexual in subtext. The Sherif posessed by the Spector as well, gets right into Dean’s face and smells him “Spector likes you” and also when Azazel possessed Samuel Campbell. Dean was also a bit offended that Pamela grabbed his leg or crotch when looking for something the “being “touched so she could get a read, “He didnt touch me there” and the WASP lady who put Deans hands on her saying “Take your hands off me young man” Theres many times Dean was sexualized in a way he didnt approve of.Sam has long hair, a soft voice, good manners and good posture. Sure, this can be considered feminine, but he doesnt “like soft music” it puts him to sleep, he likes emo music and hard rock. (as the only music thats been shown he listens to) But Dean was excited to cook in a real kitchen, still does most of the cooking, does the ironing, was excited to have a clean bedroom, and is definitely more physically affectionate than Sam. Dean initiates most of the hugs, even towards men,he is prone to emotional outbursts (something females are rumored to do) and he talks a whole lot more than Sam does, talking too much is also something men complain women do.
Dean: All women lie about their age
Sam: you told that waitress you’re 29
Dean: YepDean also loves chick flicks and Dr Sexy MD (the show, not in love with a character) and Spanish soap operas, and cries a lot more than Sam does. Dean was named after his grandmother, and in the parallel between John and Mary, Sam is John and Dean is Mary.
If you watch the show without feminist goggles on, neither brother looks like theyre femininly coded, though both have some feminine qualities, and both have some negative masculine qualities. One may say that one of Dean’s toxic masculinity traits is that he’s too aggressive/violent when not necessary, but Sam’s is that he’s too secretive and its extremely rare if he shows his feelings (though we Sam girls want to blame the writers on that, claiming they dont like Sam, instead of it being an actual part of his character) Dean has claimed Sam wasnt in his right mind and couldnt handle certain things, and Sam has done the same with Dean. Sam isnt a damsel in distress on the show, though sometimes Dean teases he is, but in reality they have saved each other equal amounts of times, and many of you just take Dean’s normal brother ribbing as “this is what the viewer thinks”. Dean has said Sam is annoying, and whiny, and Sam has said Dean is gross and an idiot. Does that mean its true, or that they’re being brothers? Sam told Dean he was weak after Hell, Dean insulted Sam about his mental state after Hell… both really sucked with communication on those ends.
I take the word of the creators of the characters when they say theyre molded to be like Luke and Hans, or Butch and Sundance, than the popular fandom opinion that theyre modled after Mean Husband and Weak 50s Housewife (insert which ever brother you want in which spot because both the sam girls and the Dean girls claim this, just the other way around)
Watch the show how you want to, thats fine, just realize theres more than one way to observe these characters and some of us dont see either portrayed as the unimportant female coded antagonst
