Do not arm teachers. Public education is not a military institution. We did not choose this profession to fight violently. If we felt that some sort of combat or law enforcement profession was our calling, we would have done that. I am not cut out for that, and I don’t see that as a weakness or failing on my part. I would also make a terrible surgeon or pop singer or accountant. That’s ok: not everyone is cut out to teach, and there’s nothing wrong with that either.

I am an educator. I am not law enforcement, nor should I have to be to teach.

I teach reading and writing. I teach speaking.

I teach LISTENING.

I teach CRITICAL THINKING.

None of these require a gun. Quite honestly, if everyone is doing all of those things well, no one should need a gun.*
