It’s my headcanon that Sam’s one of those people who can recall almost anything they read. He’s a different sort of genius from Dean. His is very academic intelligence, in that he has an impressive ability to understand, retain and utilize knowledge at levels some can’t. It’s also my headcanon that he’s got naturally high emotional intelligence, but that he got so little quality socialization as a kid that he sometimes doesn’t know quite what to do with himself. But he empathizes really well.
