letters-to-lgbt-kids:

My dear lgbt+ kids,

Hobbies are simply activities you enjoy, and of course activities don’t have a gender.

But we can’t deny that there are people who think of some hobbies as “girl hobbies” and others as “boy hobbies”. That can affect how you feel about your hobbies or which activities you even try out in the first place.

It’s not a challenge only lgbt+ people face but it can be especially difficult for us.

A lesbian girl who doesn’t like any things that are considered girly? She’s seen as a “walking stereotype” or might hear “If you like girls so much, why don’t you act like one?”. But if she loves girly activities, then she’s “too girly to be a real lesbian”.

Trans people are expected to like the things that society decided a “real boy” or “real girl” needs to like – but at the same time, they should not do that because, duh, don’t be a walking stereotype!

You can’t win. No matter what you like or dislike, someone will think it’s wrong and contradicts your identity.

If you are able to say “Screw that, I will do whatever the heck I want”, I love your confidence!

But if it’s hard for you to seperate yourself from those expectations, that’s okay. If you don’t dare to try something or if you feel embarassed when your hobbies come up, please don’t feel guilty. It’s not your fault that people slap a gender on perfectly genderless things.

With all my love,

Your Tumblr Mom
