Sam Winchester with orange wings.

Sastiel Creations Challenge | @ladylilithprime

Theme: Colours | Prompt: Orange

-Orange is the New Pink and Gold-

THERE WERE NUANCES to an angel’s Grace that were rarely spoken of or explained to humans, and went largely unremarked upon by angels because they already knew and what did it matter? It wasn’t as if angels were going around leaving huge chunks of their Grace in random humans, after all. Sure, there were the occasional Vessels who retained a little more than the usual fading imprint on their souls from having housed an angel for a brief time, but it had been a very long time since the angels had walked freely among humans and many had dismissed it as a quirk of stronger bloodlines before putting it out of mind.

And then Sam Winchester said Yes to Lucifer, wrestled control away from the Archangel inhabiting his body, and flung himself down into the Cage with Lucifer and Michael along for the ride to be trapped there until a recently promoted to seraph Castiel retrieved his body and Dean Winchester bargained with Death for the return of Sam’s soul. That soul, battered and shredded and patched over as it was, retained more than a fleeting imprint of Grace, not just from Lucifer but from Michael as well. When the Wall inside his head broke, the Grace was no longer held back and fused more fully with the soul it was attached to before Castiel came and took upon himself the pain inherent to Sam’s flayed soul, allowing the human to rest, to sleep, and to finally heal… and to fully absorb the Grace.

The Trials to close Hell took their own toll on Sam, ripping new furrows into his soul, burning away the toxins of lingering demon blood from months of addiction and use that had been heaped upon the deeply embedded traces introduced in infancy. With the Trials left incomplete, those furrows were left open and raw, and into that ragged and tattered internal structure came Gadreel, calling himself Ezekiel and pouring much of his own essence into Sam in effort to heal him from within even as he bolstered his own ragged and tortured Grace with the light of Sam’s soul. When Sam was finally made aware of his body-hijacking passenger and forced Gadreel out, the separation was less neat than might have been the case had Gadreel left more willingly, and so a greater portion of Grace was left behind than usual once more. Castiel assisted Sam in the removal of as much of the Grace as he dared, but in the end he could not remove the parts already fused into Sam without risking Sam’s death– something Castiel would not even consider to be an option, not even when the meager syringe of Grace they had extracted was not enough to track the disgraced former Sentry of Eden.

There were problems. There were challenges. The angels warred and made peace, rose and fell. The Darkness was released, Lucifer escaped the Cage, God showed himself for the first time in the form of the prophet Chuck, Amara and Chuck made peace and left, Lucifer of all angels sired a Nephilim, Castiel was killed… and through it all the Grace in Sam’s soul became so deeply fused to his being that it was nearly impossible to tell that there was any Grace at all within the soul’s light. When Jack was born, he Imprinted on Castiel as his father, but the first bond he formed was with Sam, soul-Grace to soul-Grace. And then, miracle of miracles, Castiel was resurrected (or perhaps resurrected himself after Jack Reached out to him and woke him up), and in their own careful, private moment he finally had the courage to seize the moment and ask Sam to bond with him as his mate. And so Sam gained a piece of Castiel’s Grace to twine around his soul, and that was the tipping point for all the rest.

Grace, by and large, appeared on the visual spectrum to be a bluish white. On the greater sensory spectrum, Grace carried the imprint of the angel from which it came, which included the resonant frequency of the angel’s class, their hierarchy, and their Aspect. Lucifer’s Aspect had been Water, which had turned to Ice as the Darkness corrupted him from within, and his wings reflected that in their appearance, turning wings that were once a match to Michael’s scarlet into the pink and white seen in a flamingo. Michael’s wings, too, changed, going from scarlet to copper and rose as the two were pulled further and further apart by a destiny neither of them wanted but could not find the will to fight. Jack’s own wings were pale yellow, reflecting his sire’s Aspect in the paleness of their color, but most clearly showing his Imprint on Castiel, whose wings before his harrowing trips through Hell had stained them black once shone like burnished gold, nearly as bright and beautiful as the Archangel under whom he had first served before Gabriel had fled from Heaven.

With so much Grace fused to his soul, it only stood to reason that the morning after bonding with Castiel (and consummating that bond for several hours after) when Sam woke up to feel his back aching, it wasn’t just from the physical aspect of their bonding. Nor were the wings he could see stretched out over his and Castiel’s naked bodies just the single, somewhat damaged pair of blackened wings he had become used to seeing just over Castiel’s shoulders. He could even be forgiven the initial alarm upon seeing that second pair of wings that caused him to fall out of the bed with a yelp as arms and wings both flailed about in an awkward and mostly futile attempt to catch himself. Even if the sudden absence of his mate against his side had not awakened Castiel, the noise Sam made would have done it, and a tousled head of dark hair appeared over the side of the bed with wide blue eyes staring down at his sprawled out mate, hard muscle and scarred skin a direct and entirely too enticing contrast to the pristine, newly sprouted sunset orange wings half curled around Sam’s prone form.

“Are you okay?” Castiel asked, although he knew the answer. Years of living among humans, and the Winchesters in particular, had given Castiel some insight into why humans would ask these seemingly foolish questions with obvious answers. Lacking the natural telepathy common among angels, the verbal inquiry was as much to alert the person being asked that the one asking cared enough to express concern. As bonded mates, he and Sam shared a mental bond as well as a spiritual bond between Sam’s soul and Castiel’s Grace, but Castiel was familiar with the contentious history surrounding Sam’s psychic powers – contention that Castiel was ashamed to admit he had contributed to under Heaven’s orders – and so had decided the night before to utilize the more human manner of communication while Sam became accustomed to their connection.

Now, however, it seemed that he and Sam both would need to become accustomed to more than either of them had previously supposed or even expected, and Castiel was more than a little concerned for how Sam would react. The startlement was probably to be expected, and the lack of screaming or profanity was cautiously reassuring. Then again, considering the way Sam was blinking up at him, it was entirely possible that his beloved was in shock.

“I have wings,” Sam said after a long moment, his words slow and precise as if he were testing the fit of them on his tongue. The corners of his mouth twitched down and his lips thinned as his eyebrows drew together in confusion, which seemed to indicate that the words were not making sense to Sam’s mind regardless of their accuracy. He tilted his head back a little bit further to meet Castiel’s eyes. “I have wings?”

“It would appear so, yes,” Castiel confirmed, giving a cautious nod. Sam mimicked him, nodding slowly as he stared up at the sweeping curtains of orange feathers curling around him.

“Well, fuck me,” he said at length.

It was a statement of resignation and dismay. Castiel knew that, knew perfectly well that it was not actually an invitation. However, staring down at the glorious expanse of bare skin of the body he had spent several hours worshipping as only one can when worshipping a mate, framed and unintentionally displayed by the curves of healthy, full-plumed wings as glorious as could have been found on any angel before the Apocalypse and all the troubles thereafter, Castiel found himself responding with a raised eyebrow and a deliberately even-toned, “Again? Well, if you insist….”

Sam’s resulting blush was just as attractive as the rest of him.

I still feel robbed of a proper Sam n Cas episode

They’re brothers, not co-workers

Deleted scene where Sam n Cas sit silently in the library, reading stuff. The rift glows ominously behind them. They utterly ignore it. Cas turns a page. Sam checks his watch. The rift crackles somewhat grumpily at being ignored.

Occasionally one of them will get up, walk over to the rift, glare at it while debating whether it’s worth peeking over to see what’s on the other side, but resignedly going back to their research.

At some point, Sam decides to at least make sure Dean and Ketch didn’t just jump through and twist all their ankles landing wrong in a sand dune right on the other side or something, He makes sure he’s got Cas’s attention, and without another word sticks his head through the rift and is zapped to the AU where he finds himself ankle-deep in snow. After being grateful he wasn’t walking around the bunker in his socks, he looks around and sees two sets of footprints heading off down the snow-covered road.

It’s a good sign, at least Dean and Ketch made it through and walked off side by side. He strains to see into the distance in case one of them just up and killed the other, but the road is clear as far as he can see. There’s nothing else he can really do there aside from drawing even more attention to the weird glowy rift and be grateful it didn’t open into the middle of Michael’s camp or a horde of demons who were getting ready to storm through to the bunker or something.

He decides to try an experiment while he’s there. He picks up a handful of snow and packs it down into a compact snowball, and then hesitates for only a second before tossing it through the rift. he waits a minute or two, until Cas tosses back a crumpled wad of note paper. He picks it up and reads the list of reference books he’d crossed off their list of potential research information hours ago but stuffs it in his pocket. Interdimensional littering isn’t polite.

He pops back through to the library and finds the half-melted snowball sitting on a plate beside his stack of books. Cas squints up at him. They nod at each other and go back to work.

I LOVE EVERYONE IN THIS BAR

I’m perpetually amazed at how awesome how y’all are.

Cas and Sam are sitting together at the table again, the rift flickering sullenly in the middle of the room.

Sam turns a page, engrossed in an apocryphal treatise he found on angelic healing powers.

Cas frowns at the laptop, trying to follow the ridiculously convoluted iterations of the Scooby Doo series through the years on Scoobypedia. If he’s done his calculations correctly, and assuming the Scooby Gang solved one mystery a week since the first day of their junior year of high school—

Suddenly the rift flares and a blast of cold wind sweeps through the bunker.

A black bird skids to a halt on the table, scattering mangy feathers as it frantically tries to right itself.

Sam stares at it for a moment, then slides around to the end of the table, his hands out as though to placate the struggling creature.

Cas glares suspiciously at the rift.

The bird finally gets to its feet, claws skittering on the smooth table.

“Is it hurt?” Sam asks, reaching tentatively.

The bird lets out a wheezy ‘caw’ and promptly settles onto its belly, staring back at Sam.

Cas peers at it.

The inky feathers are dull and scraggly, the dark brown eyes that should be roving all over are quiet and weary.

With a somber glance at Sam, Cas reaches out with both hands and picks up the crow gently. It squawks once in protest.

“He’s malnourished. Only a juvenile.” He strokes two fingers down the bird’s back, and it twitches as its feathers fluff and turn glossy.

It sits placidly in Cas’ hand, looking around more alertly.

“We should… we should send it back,” he offers without conviction.

“Probably,” replies Sam with an equal lack of enthusiasm.

Cas takes a few steps toward the rift and hesitates.

“It doesn’t belong here,” he states.

They consider the bird in Cas’ hand for a moment.

“I mean, what would we do if it were a person?” Sam posits.

Castiel cocks his head in question.

“If a person had wandered through, instead of a bird? Would we… would we make them go back?”

The young crow yells defiantly at the rift.

Cas raises an eyebrow. “He does not want to go back.”

The crow squalls again.

“He says there’s nothing for him there,” says Cas. “His nestmates have scattered, or died. He hasn’t even seen one of his own kind since winter fell.”

Sam pleads silently at Cas.

Cas holds the bird to his chest, and together he and Sam start up the stairs to the front door.

The crow flies away but settles on a tree nearby, cawing twice.

“It’s just a bird, right?” says Sam uncertainly. “No harm, no foul?”

Castiel doesn’t answer.

They watch the crow for a long time.

It preens and flicks its tail before calling out again.

After a beat, Sam asks, “What was that? Was it saying anything?”

Cas sighs resignedly. “He says he owes us a life debt.”

“That— that’s awesome, right?”

Cas looks at his friend incredulously. “It’s a crow, Sam,” he growls, and shoulders back into the bunker.

Sam lets out an affronted breath. “Well,” he calls out to the bird, “you’re welcome. See you around… I guess.”

The bunker door squeals shut, and the crow flies off on his first mission, dreaming of all the shiny things he might find in this bright new world.

Summary: He does everything to not think of the night that got him into this. No, he won’t think of a mop of dark hair or piercing blue eyes. He won’t think of a gravelly voice or the clinking of glasses. And most definitely, he won’t think of that intoxicating smell or the feeling of his Baby’s leather backseat under his sweaty palms. When Dean Winchester breaks the one rule he swore to never break, he has to bear consequences he never wanted to deal with, and needs to get creative to solve the problem.

Castiel’s Sexuality

I have seen several posts about demisexual!Cas or asexual!Cas but none of them go really far into the meta behind this reading. Unlike Dean’s sexuality, Castiel’s seems to be fairly less talked about.  One reason for this is Cas’s non-human nature. This makes me and others hesitant to give Cas human labels. I am comfortable doing so because Cas regardless of what he is, he is written by humans that apply human experiences to their characters. Humans have a human bias so all characters that they write regardless of species will have human traits. Often this means that they have a sexuality too. Also, labels are not always confining. I find the definition of asexual broad enough that it can apply to non-humans as well. As many people who are LGBTQ+ know there is something freeing about finding a term that they relate to.

Asexuality – the lack of sexual attraction to others, or low or absent interest in or desire for sexual activity.

DEAN
Well. Last night on earth. What are your plans?
CASTIEL
I just thought I’d sit here quietly.
DEAN
Come on, anything? Booze, women?
CASTIEL looks at DEAN and away, uncomfortable.
DEAN
You have been with women before. Right? Or an angel, at least?
CASTIEL rubs the back of his neck.
DEAN
You mean to tell me you’ve never been up there doing a little cloud-seeding?
CASTIEL
Look, I’ve never had occasion, okay?

Cas is clearly uncomfortable here and I don’t think it’s because he is some shrinking violet about sex. He just isn’t interested and Dean pursuing the matter makes him more and more understandably uncomfortable. Even though this is an older episode, this same uncomfortableness also came up with Hannah.

image

CASTIEL
What are you doing?
HANNAH
I’m taking a shower.
CASTIEL
Um…We don’t need to shower.
HANNAH
I know.
[Hannah looks confused by Castiel’s reaction]
Are you –Does this bother you?
CASTIEL
Bothered? I…I’m not.
HANNAH
[Hannah smirks]
Good.

Hannah was interested in Cas. When Cas was not interested in her in this way. Cas is no longer a virgin in this scene so the writers were not trying to write Cas as some prudish virgin, yet his reaction is very similar to that of when he was a virgin. I believe this is because Castiel isn’t uncomfortable with the idea of sex but is uncomfortable in these two situations because of the situation itself. People are trying to get an allosexual reaction from someone who is simply not interested in these two situations.

Demisexual – a person who does not experience sexual attraction unless they form a strong emotional connection with someone.

image

MEG
I miss the simplicity. I was bad. You were good. Life was easier. Now it’s all so messy. I’m kind of good, which sucks. And you’re kind of bad – which is actually all manner of hot. We survive this… I’m gonna order some pizza and we’re gonna move some furniture around. You understand?
CASTIEL
No, I-I – [MEG smiles suggestively] wait – actually… Yes, I –

This doesn’t mean that Cas isn’t interested in sex at all. On the contrary, Cas seems to be demisexual or very close to it. Asexuality is a spectrum from Aces that don’t want any sex to allosexuals (people who are not asexual). There are certain situations that Cas has to be in to be ‘ok’ with sex. One of which was when Meg propositioned him. At this point, they know each other very well and Meg makes sure that Cas is in his right mind before asking. She also makes sure that Cas understood the question. This all leads me to suspect that Cas is more demisexual or grey-ace because this is someone he knows very well and he is ok with having sex with her. Castiel also knew Hannah very well but the difference is that Cas did not see Hannah in a sexual way but as only a friend.

image

The first time we see Cas in a sexual situation is when he goes to the brothel with Dean. Cas is very uncomfortable there. It is implied that this is simply because he is a virgin but I don’t like this implication that all virgins are prudes.  I think Cas just genuinely does not want to be there and does not really want to have sex. Not because he is a virgin but because he falls somewhere on the asexual spectrum. Cas does something really interesting when he meets Chasity.  He reads her mind. We know this because he learns facts about her past that she did not share with Cas verbally. Why would Cas do this? and Why was this his first reaction to being in a sexual situation? I think he wanted to get to know her better. He needed to know her before having sex with her.

image

CASTIEL: It’s very complex.
DEAN: Mm-hmm.
CASTIEL: If the pizza man truly loves this babysitter, why does he keep slapping her rear? Perhaps she’s done something wrong.
DEAN: You’re watching porn? Why?
CASTIEL: It was there.

Like I said Cas is not a blushing shrinking violet even though he is a virgin. It’s the whole situation of Dean trying to get Cas to do something he does not want to do. That is what makes Cas uncomfortable in 5.03 at the brothel, not the sex. Cas has shown a curiosity towards sex more than being uncomfortable with it. Even in 10.07 when Cas is bothered by Hannah’s nudity this is more because he knows that Hannah has feelings for him that he doesn’t share then the nudity itself.

So why isn’t Castiel uncomfortable when Meg kisses him in 6.10? Before he knew Meg very well? This is because this is an example of Castiel’s curiosity. He wanted to understand what he saw in the porn he was watching. So when given the opportunity, he acted part of it out.

image

MEG: What was that?
CASTIEL: I learned that from the pizza man.

Many asexuals will put themselves in a sexual situation for a similar reason. Even though we may not experience sexual attraction does not mean that we are not curious about what all the hype is about surrounding sex. For example, I myself made out with a random stranger just to try it. It’s part of why I identify as demisexual. Just because Cas kissed Meg and also when he had sex with April, doesn’t mean that he was attracted to them. both of these instances were times when Cas was experimenting with sex.

image

CASTIEL
Yes, there’s more to humanity than survival. You… look for purpose, and you must not be defeated by anger or despair. Or hedonism, for that matter.
DEAN
Where does hedonism come into it?
CASTIEL
Well, my time with April was very educational.
SAM
Yeah. I mean, I would think that getting killed is something.
CASTIEL
And having sex.

Cas clearly saw having sex as part of being human. This is why I think it is important to label Castiel’s sexuality. Just because you are not interested in sex does not make you inhuman. Yes, Cas sees the situation with April in the wrong light but that doesn’t mean we can’t use his reactions to it to gauge what he was thinking.  I think he wanted to try sex just because he was human and he saw having sex as part of the human experience. His motivations had little to do with April herself. Unfortunately, I think Cas’s aloofness about sex prevents him from seeing what April did as rape.

Hopefully, this helps put some more light on Cas’s sexuality and shows the great example of asexuality that Cas is.

I tagged some people who I thought may like to read about demisexual Castiel

I love this meta! Great examples and quotes all. I hope it’s okay if I comment on a couple of things.

Sex as a Human Experience

I can see why Cas might think this – Dean is his role model for humanity, and Dean has quite a bit of sex. Dean tries to get Cas to have sex, too, and behaves like it’s a shame for somebody to die a virgin, so you can see how Cas would be curious about it all. Anna, who was Cas’s superior in the past, also cut out her grace and fell to go do things like have sex, so I’m sure that adds to the “this is something great that people are willing to do risky things for” implication.

Cas’s Perspective of Sexuality

Maybe Cas thinks from his own experience that angels in general are asexual. I’m ace myself, and I didn’t realize my perspective of sex and desire was not typical for a LONG time. Since Cas is just learning about his sexuality during the show (the scenes with porn, April, Meg, etc), it seems reasonable that he might take his own perspective as the baseline and think other angels regard sex the same way he does. Cas is an unusual angel, though, and I think this is another example of him standing out from the others.

Sex and Angels

It’s underscored with various examples that asexuality is NOT an angel trait in general. Some examples of other angels and sexual situations:

  • Hannah was physically attracted to Cas
  • Balthazar went and had a twelve-way first chance he got
  • Gabriel went and filmed porn starring himself
  • Nephilim Jane’s angel parent must have been interested in sex enough to have it and conceive her
  • Naomi and Crowley were past lovers
  • Akobel and Lily Sunder were assumed to have conceived a nephilim together, so they must have been having sex
  • Abner adopted his vessel’s family and took on the role of husband and father (this one COULD remain asexual, but they didn’t particularly imply that it was)

I’m sure there are more but you get the idea. There’s plenty of evidence that angels can feel sexual desire and that many have acted on it, forbidden or not.

Despite being the angel who has spent probably the most time around humans, and having Dean “Mr. Right Now” Winchester as a role model, Castiel seems less inclined to do anything sexual than most other angels. Ace!Cas is a very believable reading of what the show gives us about him.

These are all wonderful additions! I love when people comment on stuff because most of the time I feel like I am speaking to the void. I love that you used the examples of other angels having sex besides Cas that was such a great addition to this.

I was thinking about making a sequel to this because I kinda forgot about Daphne Allen. She was Castiel’s “wife” in season 7 and like you pointed out with the angel Abner it’s not clear whether or not that relationship included sex. Going by their slightly awkward interactions though, I think it is possible that that relationship whatever it was did not include sex. Especially when you factor in Castiel’s reactions to sex from season 9 it seems like Cas didn’t have sex until then.

Thank you, I’m happy my reply contributed something here! It would be good to discuss Daphne, and may I also suggest Cas’s manager Nora while he was human and working at the Gas N Sip? Dean assumed there was interest in sex there, and Cas thought she was asking him on a date until it was revealed that she needed a babysitter. Nora seemed completely oblivious to the idea that Cas might be interested in a date, though. I’m curious about your thoughts on that!

Awesome stuff…I’m bad at meta but I love this!!

My final request: from @happihufflepuff- “Imagine Sam and Eileen’s kid only liking being held by Eileen. She cannot STAND being held by Sam or Dean. Sometimes even Dean looking at her will send her into a fit. Sometimes Cas stops by and the baby is okay with being held by Cas which of course makes Mr. Moose very jealous.”
