Here’s a thought –
STOP PRETENDING DEAN WINCHESTER IS STUPID AND BRAINLESS 2K15
STOP ACTING LIKE HE WOULDN’T HAVE GONE TO COLLEGE AND BEEN LIKE AN ENGINEERING MAJOR OR SOMETHING WITH DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES!
HELLO.
HE MADE AN EMF READER OUT OF AN OLD WALKMAN.
HE MADE THE ELECTROMAGNET THAT DESTROYED ALL OF THE GHOSTFACERS MATERIALS.
HE’S REBUILT THE IMPALA FROM THE GROUND UP. MORE THAN ONCE.
STOP ACTING LIKE HE’S NOT THE BRILLIANT MAN THAT HE IS.
GAH!
Ok, I feel better now.
Here’s a thought –
STOP PRETENDING DEAN WINCHESTER IS STUPID AND BRAINLESS 2K18
HE MADE AN EMF READER OUT OF AN OLD WALKMAN. HE MADE THE ELECTROMAGNET THAT DESTROYED ALL OF THE GHOSTFACERS MATERIALS. HE’S REBUILT THE IMPALA FROM THE GROUND UP. MORE THAN ONCE.
But.I think after school Dean would want to be a fireman. He said he always wanted to be one (even being a hunter alredy) in 1×22, so I think he would have been one. Because he couldn’t save his mom, but he could save another people.
So, yeah, STOP ACTING LIKE HE’S NOT THE BRILLIANT MAN THAT HE IS. He’s just… Not academic.
There are a BILLION posts on Tumblr that show, not only Dean’s scientific and engineering skills, but also his ability to come up with plans on the fly, most of the time while in immediate danger, and have them SUCCEED!
Dean Winchester is not academic in a traditional sense. He knows a LOT about his job. He knows the Bible, he knows a shit ton of lore, he has tons of random pop culture facts that he sometimes applies to his work, he has read so many books on monsters and lore and has mentioned reading “every book” in the bunker. He also has a ton of medical based knowledge that he uses to help mostly himself and Sam after (or during) hunts. He is willing to sit for hours on end reading books and scouring the internet for answers or even just a small clue as to what he’s dealing with.
He got a short tutorial from Frank on hacking and became an expert.
OH AND LETS NOT FORGET the time he went LARPing with Charlie, was there all of FIVE MINUTES and fixed her strategy, despite not even knowing even a little bit about what she was doing and who everyone was.
Just because he never went to college doesn’t mean he’s stupid. Just because he makes jokes, watches cartoons and acts like an goof sometimes doesn’t mean he’s dumb. He has hobbies???
Dean also uses the assumption that he’s “the dumb one” to his advantage, often to make the enemy underestimate him, then he strikes (example is when Toni called him an ape and accused him of not using the bunker to its full potential, then attacking Mary. Dean then knocks her out, knowing that the attack on Mary will stop).

He didn’t go to college, he didn’t really do much in high school but that’s circumstance. How did he have time between moving all the time, helping his dad and taking care of Sam? Not to mention the stress of literally worrying about life and death all the time and the trauma he still lived with. He had to prioritize and it’s pretty understandable that school ended up fairly low on the list.
He did get a GED – he didn’t have to(esp in his line of work, they don’t look for high diplomas), he chose to. He’s read books he didn’t have to read for his job but that he wanted to, well respected books, even classics.
He didn’t need to learn how to build an EMF reader for his job(most hunters seem to buy them), he didn’t have to learn how to build an EMP(most hunters probably wouldn’t even have thought of it). It helps knowing how to fix a car, given lack of money and perhaps not wanting to be on the radar at times, but he didn’t need to learn as much as he did or how to completely rebuild one, that’s not part of his job as a hunter. Frankly I think some of these are examples where the job was basically an excuse to do something he was interested, technology, science, etc.
I mean academic in the tradition sense, yes I suppose but again, that’s circumstance. If you look at his knowledge? It’s as academic as any lawyers knowledge is. Much of it involves long hours of research and studying BOOKS, internet, other sources of knowledge. How is that really different from a historian, archaeologist or plenty of other academic pursuits. There are plenty of academic pursuits that involve great knowledge of various types of lore.
Quite honestly I think if life had happened different? Dean probably would have been considered the genius in the family – his mind really seems to work that way. He’s both smart in that he picks up and remembers knowledge and he’s quick witted and makes the sort of seemingly intuitive leaps that often signify some of very high intelligence. And he can also read and research and crap like that. 😀
As for the poster saying he’d be a fireman – first off lots of kids want to be firemen, secondly Dean didn’t get to be a kid for very long, so when he got to “play one” it was exciting for him, I didn’t get the sense out of that scene that he seriously thought about making a career out of it. Third, there are lots of ways to save people, he could have been something other than a fireman or policeman. You know maybe even something…that involved university and degrees.
None of those things are necessary to be highly intelligent, because Dean is highly intelligent even though he’s doesn’t have any of the traditional trappings of it(good grades, college degree, etc) but let’s not act like somehow no matter what kind of life he’d led he wouldn’t be anything except something coded as blue collar. He might do something like that but given a choice, he might have done a lot of other things too. If he’d been able to really go to school in a stable environment maybe a math teacher or an English teacher or a biology teacher would have been that special inspiration that made him want to be something OTHER than a fireman or a police officer or a mechanic by encouraging his intelligence and the interests he had in different directions.
All of this!!!
