Dean pulls a silver switchblade from his shirt pocket and flicks it open. He gestures of the creature’s hand, and she stretches it out for him, her eyes still on Sam. She flinches when the blade slides across her skin, but there is no smoke. Dean pockets it and repeats the process with holy water. Still no smoke. No hissing. No issues. Just a slightly wetter looking Eileen.
“See? I’m not a shifter. Or a demon. It’s just me.”
Sam exhales and lowers the gun. “How?”
“How what?”
“How aren’t you dead?” Dean asks.
“I saw your body. I had to make sure. You were – it was a hellhound,” Sam says.
Eileen’s face falls and she drops her arms. “I was on a plane until three days ago. I took a greyhound to Wichita.”
“But I -”
“I wasn’t me,” she says, “maybe you were mistaken – “
“No. It had your face. It was meant to be you. I was supposed to see you.”
“Oh, Sam.” Eileen comes forward, wrapping her arms around him and nuzzling into his chest. Sam lets out a breath and allows his body to relax. His heart is thundering behind his ribs and he’s probably about to start crying, but he lets his free hand slide up and down Eileen’s back. She’s here. She’s real. She’s okay. Thank fuck.

“Eileen? I thought you were dead!” Sam was so surprised that he had forgotten to sign along with his words, something he’d taken to doing nearly the instant they’d met. Good thing she could read lips, Eileen thought. “Oh my god…I can’t believe…I had hoped…you’re alive!”
He stepped around the bed and grabbed her into a tight hug, his hands clutching at the fabric of her t-shirt. He was shaking as he leaned down to envelope her in his arms, burying his face in her hair. Eileen felt his mouth move, but whatever he said was lost. She thought she had the gist of it though when she felt the wetness fall on her cheek, on her neck.
Sam was crying. She returned the hug, running her hands soothingly along his warm, shirtless back, humming something – the vibrations had always been somewhat soothing to her and she hoped it would to him as well – and just waited.
He pulled away finally, his eyes still shining wetly, and he moved his shaking hands to cup her face wonderingly. Happiness and confusion mixed in. “I’m so happy to see you alive–” the words were hard to pick out “but how?”
“It’s a long story, Sam,” she said, signing as she spoke to be certain she was understood. She didn’t know how well she did or didn’t speak. She couldn’t hear herself, but she’d had a few ‘well meaning’ folks tell her she had an odd way of doing so.
The movement of her hands caught his eyes and he watched her hands moving before he looked back at her. He dropped his and shakily tried to sign as he spoke. It wasn’t second nature to him yet, and it was obvious he was struggling. “I’m sorry – I was rude. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be, Sam. I understand. You look exhausted,” Eileen noted.
Sam let out a breath and ran a hand through his hair with a nod. “Yeah, you could say that again. It’s been…a rough couple of days.”

Monday morning came all too soon. Sam headed downtown to a large high rise office building where his law firm was based.
He got on the elevator to head up, and when the doors closed he was almost overwhelmed by the best scent he ever smelled. It was like every wildflower: lilac, lily, lavender, plus fresh cut grass. It smelled like summer out in a country field. He looked over to see the cutest little omega. She had wavy long brown hair, and barely came up to Sam’s chest.
“Hi, I’m Sam,” he said.
But she didn’t turn to look at him or even acknowledge that he said anything. She just sniffled, wiped her nose with a tissue and continued staring at the display screen where it showed what floor the elevator was on. When the elevator dinged and the door opened she got off and took her alluring scent with her. Sam watched her go and saw her entering an office. A deaf services office.
Huh, Sam thought, maybe she’s deaf and couldn’t hear me? I need to learn some basic sign language.
That day when he had a moment to spare at his desk he looked up some sign language YouTube videos and learned how to say Hi my name is Sam, and You are very pretty. He was sure he could learn more later.

“If you take first watch, you get to snack,“ Eileen said.
Without another word, she burrowed into the cot’s sparse blankets and closed her eyes.
Sam hadn’t had anything to eat since she’d thrown a very stale pack of animal crackers from her backpack at him a few hours ago, so he made short work at his half of the crackers. They were just as stale, but that didn’t matter much to his rumbling stomach.
He took the shotgun and trained his eyes and ears on the door. Behind him, Eileen dropped off to sleep, her breathing heavy and even.
His chest constricted again.
Now, more than ever, he wanted to get back to Dean and a universe he understood. Every solid breath behind him was a reminder of how his Eileen wasn’t breathing anymore. He’d meant what he’d said to Dean a year ago—he’d thought of something, of settling down with a hunter. And then, like the universe was giving its blessing, he’d met Eileen a few weeks later. Meeting this version wasn’t catharsis—it was just a twist of the knife.

She needed to focus her energies on thwarting Cousin Arthur. If the papers Mr. Davies had brought with him yesterday proved useful, she might be able to slip out in the night with no one the wiser about her brief foray into service.

Truly, there was no cause to treat this as if it would be a long-term position, and yet, she had been touched by Mr. Winchester’s attempts to sign, especially to someone whom he believed to be a mere servant. It spoke well of him, even if his signs had been – well, a proper lady ought to have been shocked by what he had accidently said, but Eileen had grown up by the side of her Aunt Lillian, a decidedly plain-spoken, occasionally earthy, woman. A little accidental vulgarity would hardly send her into the vapours.
In the study, Mr. Winchester seated himself behind a large oak desk, and gestured for her to take one of the comfortable facing armchairs.
“Will you be wanting a letter of character?” she asked. She had spent the previous evening forging just such a document, and went now to draw it from her reticule, but Mr. Winchester waved her off.
“I believe that coming from Mr. Jarvis’s establishment is recommendation enough.”
She withdrew her hand, unsure if she felt relieved, or disappointed that her hard work would be going to waste. “In that case, perhaps you could tell me about the duties you require?” She would spend the day performing those chores, then slip back into the study in the evening, find the information she needed, and be gone before dawn.
