Like IDK! Here’s a metaphor… it could be convoluted BUT LET’S GO WITH IT…

Say Lucifer needs 66 inches to pass through a door, otherwise he has to stay locked in the cage.

Dean opened the door the first inch because he had “the righteous man” key.

64 other things happened that included angels and demons and other shit to open those inches next.

Then Sam opened the door the last inch.

WHO GETS THE BLAME?

Well I can tell you RIGHT NOW no one opened the door all by themselves.

AND DEFINITELY IT WAS NOT JUST SAM.

Literally Dean had to be the one to nudge the door open first because being “The Righteous Man” was the key. And it literally had to be killing Lilith at inch 66 to nudge it completely open, so they HAD to go in that order. Just because Sam’s was last doesn’t mean he threw the fucking door open all by himself and SOMEHOW HE deserves all the blame

LIKE WOW

WHY IS THIS SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND?

I almost think any of those 65 seals could be broken without freeing lucifer, but because the first seal was broken, it created the condition in which those 65 seals would be added to the lucifer-freeing equation.

If Sam had killed Lilith (or if any of those seal breaking events happened) before Dean broke the first seal, i don’t think it would have freed Lucifer. Lilith would just be dead.

It’s like protein synthesis. You need that start codon to begin protein synthesis and no matter how much of the other stuff you throw at the ribosome, it won’t synthesize protein unless there is a methionine present.
